Nathan Gerbe scored twice and Ryan Miller recorded his fourth shutout of the season to give the Buffalo Sabres a 2-0 road victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.
Gerbe scored at 8:56 of the second period and added an empty-net goal late in the game as the Sabres (36-28-9) maintained a three-point lead for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference over Carolina, which kept pace Tuesday with a 4-3 win over Ottawa.
Miller stopped 31 shots for the shutout, while Carey Price made 22 saves for Montreal.
The loss left the Canadiens (40-27-7) three points behind rival Boston for the Northeast Division lead. The Bruins defeated New Jersey 4-1 on Tuesday.
It was Buffalo’s third consecutive victory over Montreal and tied the season series at three wins apiece.
