Devils 3, Bruins 2
Rookie Alexander Urbom had the game winner midway through the third period as the New Jersey Devils closed out a disappointing season with a 3-2 home victory over the Boston Bruins on Sunday.
After New Jersey's Patrik Elias and Boston's Rich Peverley exchanged first-period goals, Vladimir Zharkov gave the Devils (38-39-5) the lead at the four-minute mark of the third. Urbom's first career NHL goal extended the advantage at 9:10 of the period, and the Devils held on from there to avoid being swept in their season series with Boston for the first time since 1986.
Despite the win, New Jersey is on the outside of the Eastern Conference playoff picture for the first time since 1996.
Dennis Seidenberg added a late goal for the Bruins (46-25-11), who had already won the Northeast Division title and secured the third seed in the East. They'll face the Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Johan Hedberg stopped 24 shots to earn the win.
Tuukka Rask made 29 saves in defeat for Boston. He started in place of Tim Thomas, who set the record for the best single-season save percentage in NHL history at .938.
