Stephen Weiss' power-play goal with 3 1/2 minutes to play in the third period snapped a tie as the Florida Panthers ended a five-game home losing streak with a 3-2 triumph over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
Just 35 seconds after Pittsburgh was called for too many men on the ice, Weiss' tap-in attempt from the top of the crease sneaked behind Brent Johnson but hit the right post. However, Johnson knocked the puck across the goal line as he was falling backward, giving the Panthers the victory.
Tomas Fleischmann notched a goal and an assist, defenseman Brian Campbell also scored and Weiss set up a pair of tallies for Florida, which began its four-game homestand by halting a five-game losing streak against Pittsburgh.
Chris Kunitz and Jordan Staal scored while Pascal Dupuis added two assists for the Penguins, who have lost five of six on the road.
Kunitz gave Pittsburgh the lead just 69 seconds into the game as he tapped his own rebound past Jose Theodore. Campbell knotted the contest at 7:28 and Fleischmann scored from the slot on the power play less than six minutes into the second to put Florida ahead.
Staal forged a 2-2 tie with 7:22 remaining in the second when he grabbed a rebound and moved across the slot before beating Theodore for his 10th goal of the season.
