Hurricanes 3, Maple Leafs 2
Jeff Skinner recorded a goal and an assist and Cam Ward made 23 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes held off the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs with a 3-2 win on Sunday.
Defenseman Jay Harrison and Jussi Jokinen each netted goals for the Hurricanes, who snapped a three-game slide and won for just the second time in their last nine games.
After a strong start, the Maple Leafs have dropped six of their last eight games.
The Hurricanes got on the board with 29 seconds left in the first period, when Harrison settled the puck after a long rebound at the left point. The defenseman wristed it through a scrum in front of the net and past Ben Scrivens for his second goal of the season.
Carolina struck again on the power play in the second period as Justin Faulk sent a quick pass across the slot to Jokinen, who snapped it past Scrivens.
Skinner’s eighth tally made it 3-1 with 6:52 left in the third period and proved to be the game-winner.
Phil Kessel scored twice for Toronto, increasing his NHL-leading total to 16 goals.
