Capitals 3, Senators 2 (OT)

Brooks Laich scored 12 seconds into overtime to give the Washington Capitals their first win under new coach Dale Hunter, a 3-2 triumph Saturday over the visiting Ottawa Senators.

Troy Brouwer and Nicklas Backstrom each scored and Alex Ovechkin chipped in an assist for the Capitals, who snapped a four-game slide.

Washington won the opening faceoff of overtime and Laich feed the puck to Jason Chimera, who brought it down the left side. Chimera flipped it back in the slot to Laich, who snapped his fifth goal past Craig Anderson.

Laich was playing in his 500th career NHL game.

Milan Michalek tied the game for the Senators with 3:15 left in the third period. Nick Foligno took the initial shot and Daniel Alfredsson swatted at the first rebound, forcing netminder Michal Neuvirth to the ice to make the save. Michalek was in the right place for the next rebound, tipping his 16th tally up over Neuvirth’s stick.

Washington had taken the lead earlier in the period when Brouwer took a feed from Ovechkin and wristed it past Anderson to complete the odd-man rush.

Neuvirth finished with 32 saves.
