Avalanche 3, Coyotes 2

Rookie Gabriel Landeskog scored to snap a tie midway through the third period and Semyon Varlamov made 25 saves as the Colorado Avalanche returned to their winning ways at home with a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday.

Kevin Porter tallied for the second straight contest and rookie defenseman Stefan Elliott also scored for Colorado, which rebounded after seeing its eight-game home winning streak come to an end with a 4-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.

The win came with a cost, as center Matt Duchene suffered a knee injury during the first period and did not return.

With the game tied at 2-2, Chuck Kobasew's shot was denied by Jason LaBarbera but Landeskog collected the loose puck and wristed it past the netminder at 9:10 of the third period.

Landeskog, the second overall pick of the 2011 draft, has eight goals on the season and two in the last three games.

Mikkel Boedker tallied twice, Taylor Pyatt had a pair of assists and LaBarbera finished with 32 saves as Phoenix fell for the fourth straight contest.
