Capitals 3, Sabres 1

Alex Ovechkin netted a pair of goals and Nicklas Backstrom added a goal and an assist as the Washington Capitals recorded a 3-1 victory over the visiting Buffalo Sabres on Friday.

Tomas Vokoun made 25 saves and assisted on Ovechkin’s first tally for the Capitals, who have allowed a total of two goals in winning back-to-back games.

Ovechkin has now recorded multiple points in back-to-back games after going 23 contests without more than one. He has at least one point in five straight.

With Washington on the power play in the first period, Vokoun cleared the puck to Ovechkin on the right side. The captain streaked up the wing and sent a shot at Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller that deflected off defenseman Christian Ehrhoff and into the net.

Backstrom struck from the slot at the 3:52 mark of the second, taking a feed from Alexander Semin and tapping it past Miller. It was the 100th goal of the Swedish center’s career.

Backstrom and Ovechkin got together to put the game away with 5:50 left in the third. Coming up the ice 2-on-2, Backstrom sent a backhanded pass right on Ovechkin’s blade for an easy tally.

Jordan Hecht scored the lone goal for Buffalo.
