Penguins 5, Canadiens 4 (SO)

All-Star Evgeni Malkin scored his eighth goal in five games to tie the score late in the third period and then netted the lone goal of the shootout as the Pittsburgh Penguins skated to a fifth straight victory with a 5-4 home triumph over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday.

Dustin Jeffrey recorded his first career three-point game with two goals and an assist and defenseman Kris Letang also scored for Pittsburgh, which has won four of its last five against Montreal.

After the teams were denied on the respective first attempts in the shootout, Malkin skated in and wristed the puck past Peter Budaj. Andrei Kostitsyn missed the net on his attempt and Marc-Andre Fleury denied Scott Gomez to end the contest.

With his team trailing by two in the third period, Jeffrey trimmed the deficit in half at 3:32 of the session by blasting a shot from the slot for his second goal of the contest.

Malkin then leveled the contest with 2:43 remaining in the session after converting a give-and-go with James Neal before blasting a one-timer past a sliding Budaj.

Kostitsyn and Erik Cole collected a goal and an assist apiece and Lars Eller and Max Pacioretty also tallied for Montreal, which has dropped 12 of its last 16 (4-10-2).
