Jussi Jokinen scored two goals on special teams and Cam Ward made 22 saves for his second shutout of the season and 18th of his career, as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Washington Capitals 3-0 on Friday night.
Jokinen made John Carlson pay for turning the puck over in his own zone at 12:43 in the first period when he buried a shorthanded marker past Tomas Vokoun to give the Hurricanes the early 1-0 lead.
With 18 seconds remaining in the second period, Jokinen batted down a loose puck in front of Vokoun and slid it past him on the power play for his seventh goal of the season.
Jiri Tlusty added his tenth goal of the season on a late power play after the Capitals took a took many men on the ice penalty.
Ward has allowed two goals or fewer in seven consecutive starts.
The Capitals were 8-0-1 in their last nine meetings with the Hurricanes coming into the game.
