Maple Leafs 3, Islanders 0
Matthew Lombardi scored twice and Jonas Gustavsson stopped all 25 shots he faced as the Toronto Maple Leafs cruised to a 3-0 victory over the visiting New York Islanders on Monday.
Lombardi's third and fourth goals in the past four games provided all the offense Gustavsson needed as he recorded his third shutout of the season.
With the Leafs nursing a 1-0 lead late, Phil Kessel provided some insurance 8:10 into the third period. The All-Star winger banged home a rebound of Joffrey Lupul's shot for his 26th goal of the season, tops on the team.
Lombardi put the game out of reach with 3:39 remaining, capping his first multi-goal effort since Feb. 8, 2010.
The teams renew acquaintances Tuesday on Long Island.
Lombardi kicked things off only 1:37 into the game, getting a piece of Jake Gardiner's original attempt before Islanders defenseman Mark Streit redirected it past netminder Evgeni Nabokov.
Toronto carried the play for the rest of the period, outshooting the visitors 16-5 but failing to extend the lead. Neither team had many chances in the second frame, combining for only 14 shots.
