CAPITALS 2, MAPLE LEAFS 0: Michal Neuvirth turned aside all 23 shots he faced in his 100th career game and Brooks Laich netted a shorthanded goal as host Washington posted its third consecutive victory.
Mathieu Perreault scored 42 seconds into the third period for the Capitals, who remained one point behind first-place Florida in the Southeast Division. The Panthers posted a 2-0 triumph over the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.
Washington, which sits in eighth place in the Eastern Conference, doubled its lead to four points over idle Winnipeg and Buffalo.
Neuvirth preserved his third shutout of the season and seventh career by stopping all seven shots in the third period. The 23-year-old Neuvirth improved to 4-1-1 in his career versus Toronto.
Jonas Gustavsson finished with 21 saves for the Maple Leafs, who were shut out for the second straight game and dropped 10 of their last 11.
After netting the team's first power-play goal in eight games on Saturday, Laich opened the scoring with a shorthanded tally midway through the first period. Toronto turned over the puck in the neutral zone and Laich skated in and beat Gustavsson on a breakaway for his 14th goal.
Perreault doubled the advantage early in the third period. Alexander Semin's shot was denied by Gustavsson, but Perreault cleaned up the rebound for his 12th goal.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Laich recorded Washington's third shorthanded goal of the season. Jason Chimera netted the previous two tallies. ... Capitals defenseman Dennis Wideman has collected an assist in each of his last four contests. ... Gustavsson started his fifth straight game under new coach Randy Carlyle, but fell to 1-3-1. The Capitals, who will begin a crucial five-game road trip, have struggled away from the Verizon Center. They are 12-18-3. ...
