Avalanche 4, Hurricanes 2
Matt Duchene scored two goals and set up another as host Colorado continued its blazing start under first-year coach Patrick Roy.
Alex Tanguay recorded a goal and an assist and defenseman Erik Johnson also scored for the Avalanche, who improved to 9-1-0. Semyon Varlamov made 28 saves as Colorado began a stretch during which it plays six of seven at home.
Blue-liner Andrej Sekera had a goal and an assist while Drayson Bowman netted a tally for Carolina, which completed a 2-2-0 road trip. Justin Peters stopped 30 shots in his first start of the season a day after Cam Ward went down with a lower-body injury.
Johnson, who was questionable after bruising his foot during practice on Wednesday, opened the scoring 11 1/2 minutes into the contest as Paul Stastny's pass caromed off his skate and past Peters. Duchene doubled the lead with 2:27 remaining in the first period, but Bowman halved the deficit just 12 seconds into the middle session with a shot from the right faceoff circle.
Duchene set up Tanguay for a shot from the left hash marks that beat Peters midway through the second and scored from the right circle during a power play 36 seconds into the third for a 4-1 advantage. Sekera converted a cross-slot pass from Jiri Tlusty at 2:40, but the Hurricanes were unable to get any closer.
