Hurricanes 3, Coyotes 1

Jeff Skinner scored to snap a tie three minutes into the third period for his third goal in as many contests and Justin Peters turned aside 37 shots as Carolina salvaged the finale of its four-game road trip.

Captain Eric Staal added an empty-net goal and two assists and Nathan Gerbe also tallied for the Hurricanes, who finished their four-game road trip with a 1-1-2 mark.

Paul Bissonnette scored for the first time in over two years and Mike Smith finished with 30 saves for the Coyotes, who fell to 8-2-1 versus representatives from the Eastern Conference. Phoenix's next four games are also against Eastern-based foes.

With the contest tied at 1-1, Staal won an offensive draw and Skinner alertly spotted the loose pick resting in the left circle. The NHL's First Star of the Week wired a shot under the crossbar for his eighth goal in seven games.

Bissonette opened the scoring at 6:14 of the first period after redirecting defenseman Connor Murphy's shot past Peters for his first goal since Nov. 19, 2011. Gerbe answered 8:50 into the second after electing to keep the puck on a 2-on-1 rush before wiring a shot past Smith.
