Hurricanes 2, Red Wings 1

Jiri Tlusty scored for the second straight game to lift Carolina to its first victory in Detroit since November 1989.

Elias Lindholm added a power-play goal and Cam Ward turned aside 28 shots for the Hurricanes, who had 16 losses and a tie since their last victory in the Motor City - when the franchise was known as the Hartford Whalers. The win also snapped a three-game overall skid for Carolina.

Riley Sheahan netted the lone goal for the Red Wings, who remained tied with Columbus for the two wild-card spots in the East, although the Blue Jackets own the tiebreaker. Jimmy Howard (17 saves) had his four-start winning streak snapped as Detroit fell to 5-2-1 in its last eight.

With the Hurricanes on the power play, Lindholm corralled a pass below the end line at the left post and quickly brought the puck to his forehand to scoop a shot past Howard at 8:15 of the opening period. Tlusty doubled the lead 10 minutes later, burying a fat rebound after Howard kicked out captain Eric Staal's wrist shot.

The Red Wings finally got on the board with a power-play tally at 3:43 of the third, when Sheahan deflected Tomas Jurco's shot before swatting the rebound into the net. Ward preserved the lead moments later by denying Justin Abdelkader on a 2-on-1 rush.
