Ducks 3, Red Wings 2
Ryan Getzlaf's second goal of the game with 23.6 seconds remaining in the third period lifted visiting Anaheim past Detroit.
Moments after tangling with Detroit's Niklas Kronwall on a play that saw the defenseman fall to the ice, Getzlaf gathered a loose puck before skating out from the corner and lifting a backhand shot high past Jimmy Howard to stun the Joe Louis Arena crowd.
Matt Beleskey added a third-period goal while Frederik Andersen stopped 27 shots for the Ducks, who avenged an opening-game loss to Pittsburgh. Luke Glendening and Gustav Nyquist tallied for the Red Wings, while Howard made 23 saves in defeat.
Getzlaf's first of the season 1:13 into the second period opened the scoring, but Detroit drew even with 4:27 remaining in the session. Glendening gathered the puck deep in the offensive zone and slid a backhander past Andersen for his second career goal.
Nyquist put the Red Wings ahead 1:57 into the third, blazing untouched down the left wing and zipping a wrist shot over Andersen's shoulder from the top of the faceoff circle. Beleskey countered 1:21 later, setting the stage for Getzlaf's late heroics.
