Defenseman Patrick Wiercioch snapped a tie late in the third period as Ottawa remained unbeaten in regulation at home (3-0-2).
Captain Erik Karlsson scored a goal and Clarke MacArthur added an empty-net tally for the Senators, who won for just the second time in their last six contests (2-2-2). Craig Anderson made all but two of his 31 saves over the final two periods.
Captain Henrik Zetterberg scored the lone goal for the Red Wings, who fell to 0-1-1 on a road trip that has them playing three games in four nights. Jimmy Howard turned aside 29 shots, including 16 in the opening session.
After a scoreless first period in which it outshot Detroit by a 16-2 margin, Ottawa grabbed the lead during a power play with 5:23 remaining in the second as Karlsson unleashed a blast from the blue line that beat Howard to the stick side. The goal came on the Senators' 23rd shot of the contest.
The Red Wings had a 16-7 shot advantage in the session but weren't able to solve Anderson until early in the third, when Zetterberg backhanded a loose puck in the slot past the goaltender at 2:34. Ottawa snapped the deadlock with 5:23 remaining as Wiercioch received a pass from Mark Stone at the blue line and drifted down to the top of the left faceoff circle before ripping a shot past Howard.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Detroit C Pavel Datsyuk was kept off the scoresheet for the first time in seven games this season, ending his four-game goal-scoring streak. ... Red Wings C Johan Franzen, who entered with 11 goals in five career games at Ottawa, registered an assist. ...
