Rangers 2, Senators 1 (SO)
OTTAWA -- Defenseman Dan Boyle scored the deciding goal in a shootout as the New York Rangers extended their winning streak to eight games with a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon at Canadian Tire Center.
Boyle, who was born in Ottawa, beat Senators goalie Craig Anderson with a high shot to end the game.
The Rangers have now grabbed 24 of a possible 26 points from their last 13 games.
It was the Senators' league-leading eighth visit to overtime in 17 games.
The Rangers outshot the Senators 30-22 through regulation time and 4-1 in overtime.
Three posts were hit in overtime, two by Senators winger Mike Hoffman and one by Rangers winger Rick Nash.
Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist made great left leg saves off Senators center Kyle Turris and Hoffman in the third period, while Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh had a shot labelled for the top corner go off Anderson's stick handle.
The teams played a scoreless second period that saw the Rangers lose left winger Chris Kreider for 17 minutes when he responded to a hit by Senators center Zack Smith on teammate Derek Stepan near the New York bench. Kreider won the fight with Smith but received an instigating minor, a major and a 10-minute misconduct for his efforts.
The Rangers did have four good chances in the last minute of the period, but Anderson held them at bay.
Kreider opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 2:31 mark when he deflected a point shot by center Kevin Hayes for his third of the season. Moments later, he almost had his fourth off an odd-man rush, but his shot rang off the post.
Four minutes later, defenseman Erik Karlsson tied it up off a 5-on-2 rush after Stepan missed defensemen Ryan McDonagh with a pass at the Ottawa blue line. Karlsson finished off a passing play with center Mika Zibanejad and winger Bobby Ryan by firing home his third goal in the last three games.
