Red Wings 1, Devils 0
NEWARK, N.J. -- Goaltender Petr Mrazek stopped 22 shots as the Detroit Red Wings blanked the New Jersey Devils 1-0 at Prudential Center on Monday night.
The 23-year-old had to be at his best in the first period as the Devils poured 12 shots on net. His best save came eight minutes into the third period when he denied right winger Kyle Palmieri at the last moment with a poke check.
Rookie left winger Dylan Larkin scored the game's lone goal in the first period.
The Red Wings have won consecutive games for the first time in nearly a month. They had lost four of five and seven of nine.
Devils goaltender Cory Schneider was nearly perfect, turning aside 20 of 21 shots.
The Devils had won three in a row and four of five before falling to the Red Wings.
Larkin's 14th of the season was a gorgeous goal that gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead. Center Brad Richards hit a streaking Larkin with a long pass to spring the rookie for a breakaway. Larkin deked, dropped Schneider and slid a backhander into an open net at 9:20 of the first period.
About 10 seconds earlier, Devils right winger Jordin Tootoo skated around Larkin in the neutral zone to generate a scoring chance. After the miss, Larkin was able to leak behind the Devils defense for the highlight-reel goal.
Center Darren Helm rang a shot off the goal post nine minutes into the second period that nearly gave the Red Wings a 2-0 advantage. Red Wings left winger Tomas Tatar was whistled for goaltender interference during the ensuing scramble, but the Devils were unable to capitalize on the power play.
The Devils had a chance to tie the score with eight minutes remaining when Red Wings left winger Justin Abdelkader was called for kneeing, but the Devils were unable to register a single shot on net during the man advantage.
Schneider came to the bench for an extra attacker with 1:05 remaining but did not generate a scoring chance. The Devils had 10 shots over the final two periods.
