Flyers 6, Devils 3
NEWARK, N.J. -- Right winger Wayne Simmonds and center Nick Cousins scored 50 seconds apart in the third period to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 6-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Tuesday.
Simmonds tapped home a pass from center Brayden Schenn with Devils center Travis Zajac in the penalty box for interference to make it 3-2 and Cousins scored a similar goal from near the crease on a feed from center R.J. Umberger to put the game away.
Flyers left winger Jakub Voracek and Devils right winger Kyle Palmeiri exchanged goals before center Ryan White capped the scoring with an empty-net goal.
Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and Schenn also scored for the Flyers, who won for the second time in seven games (2-3-2).
Flyers goaltender Michal Neuvirth turned back 21 shots.
Right winger Jordin Tootoo scored in the third period on a long wrist shot to tie it 2-2 for the Devils, who lost in regulation after scoring first for the first time this season (20-1-4). Right winger Tyler Kennedy had the Devils' other goal.
Goaltender Cory Schneider stopped 20 of 25 shots for the Devils.
The teams went to the first intermission tied 1-1 after a wild first 20 minutes.
After Flyers defenseman Radko Gudas was ejected for a hit to the head of left winger Bobby Farnham, the Devils appeared to take a 1-0 lead on the ensuing five-minute power play. However, a goal by center Adam Henrique was disallowed after video review ruled right winger Lee Stempniak made contact with Neuvirth just before the shot.
Kennedy's first goal in 31 games this season two minutes later would stand and put the Devils ahead 1-0 at 12:01. He snapped a wrist shot past Neuvirth after a cross-ice pass from defenseman John Moore left the goaltender out of position to make the save.
Gostisbehere extended his rookie record to 13 consecutive games with a point by evening the score with 2:37 remaining. The Flyers won the faceoff back to the blue line and Gostisbehere's quick shot got past Schneider with help from a screen in front by Simmonds.
Schenn's power-play goal at 7:55 of the second period gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead. Simmonds made a perfect pass from behind the net to Schenn, who buried a shot from the slot over the catching glove of Schneider for his 17th goal of the season.
