Islanders 3, Canucks 2
VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Defenseman Thomas Hickey scored the winning at 12:55 of the third period and also had an assist as the New York Islanders defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 Tuesday night.
Hickey put the Islanders ahead just 2:03 after Vancouver left winger Daniel Sedin had tied the game 2-2. Hickey took a shot from the blue line that deflected off Canuck defenseman Chris Tanev and past goaltender Jacob Markstrom.
Left winger Anders Lee and defenseman Travis Hamonic also scored for New York (34-20-7). Center Casey Cizikas had an assist for the Islanders, who are 5-1-1 in their last seven games
Right winger Linden Vey, on the power play, also scored for Vancouver (24-26-12).
Markstrom, making his first start in four games, stopped 21 shots. New York goalie Thomas Greiss stopped 31 shots.
Daniel Sedin tied the game at 10:52 of the third. He took a pass from center Henrik Sedin and fired a shot from the corner that squeezed through Greiss's pads.
The Canucks, who suffered their second consecutive loss, are 3-5-0 in their last eight.
The Islanders led 2-1 after 40 minutes.
Lee put New York ahead at 14:30. Defenseman Thomas Hickey took a shot that Lee deflected. It hit Canucks defenseman Ben Hutton and slid into the net where Markstrom covered it with his glove.
At first it was ruled a save but a video replay showed the puck had crossed the goal line.
The Islanders got lucky a few minutes later during a scramble in front of their net. The puck got behind Greiss and slid along the goal line before defenseman Calvin de Haan fished it out with his stick.
Vancouver outshot New York 6-2 in a first period that ended 1-1.
The Islanders scored on their first shot at 4:20. Hamonic's shot from along the boards deflected off Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis' stick and past Markstrom.
The Canucks tied it after the Islanders were called for too many men on the ice. A failed New York clearing attempt resulted in Canucks defenseman Ben Hutton taking a shot that bounced off several legs. Vey got control of the puck and found the open corner for his third goal of the year at 10:42.
It was the first power-play goal allowed by the Islanders in four games.
