Jets hold off Senators

OTTAWA -- The Winnipeg Jets scored two goals in the first period, then hung on to defeat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Sunday at Canadian Tire Centre.

Dustin Byfuglien, Mathieu Perrault and Josh Morrissey scored the Jets' goals, while Mark Scheifele and Patrik Laine had two assists apiece. Mark Stone and Zack Smith had replied for the Senators, who got a pair of assists from Erik Karlsson.

Connor Hellebuyck made 32 saves for his second win of the weekend. Mike Condon stopped 17 shots in the Ottawa net.

Already without Bobby Ryan, the Senators lost two more top-six forwards over the course of the game.

Mike Hoffman did not return after the first period, during which he sustained a lower-body injury. Stone left in the third after an illegal hit to the head from Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba, who received a two-minute penalty for the infraction.

Stone, who has a concussion history, went to the dressing room without help, but he did not return.

The Senators had a chance to tie the score in the final seconds, but after a review, it was ruled inconclusive whether puck jammed by Jean-Gabriel Pageau crossed the line.

The Jets went up 3-1 at 2:33 of the third period when Curtis Lazar coughed up the puck to Morrissey, who let go a wrist shot from the point that beat a screened Condon. It was the third of the season for Morrissey.

The Senators got that one back at the 5:05 mark of the third on Smith's 14th of the season. Karlsson earned the first assist when he found Derick Brassard, whose cross-crease pass went in off Smith's skate.

Trailing 2-0 after one period, the Senators scored the only goal of the second, a power-play effort by Stone at the 5:10 mark. Erik Karlsson earned his 41st assist of the season by feeding Stone, whose shot from the slot deflected in off Byfuglien.

The Jets scored with their first shot on goal, just 69 seconds after the opening faceoff, when Mark Scheifele found Byfuglien at the top of the right circle. Byfuglien's ninth of the season was a slap shot that beat Condon over his catching mitt.

Perreault put the Jets ahead by a pair at the 12:28 mark of the first as Winnipeg capitalized on a defensive-zone giveaway. Brassard's clearing attempt of the boards was stopped by Laine, who soft-touched a pass to Scheifele. The center put the puck in front to Perreault, who moved it around Condon and then flipped home his sixth of the season and second in two games.
