Giroux scores in OT as Flyers edge Isles
NEW YORK -- Claude Giroux scored with 1:40 left in overtime Sunday night as the Philadelphia Flyers stopped a pair of losing streaks with a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders at Barclays Center.
Giroux put back the rebound of a wraparound attempt by Shayne Gostisbehere for the Flyers (23-19-6), who came back from a 2-0 deficit to snap an overall three-game losing streak (0-3-0) as well as a nine-game road losing streak (0-7-2).
Wayne Simmonds and Ivan Provorov also scored for the Flyers and Steve Mason stopped 36 of 38 shots.
Nick Leddy and Alan Quine scored for the Islanders (19-17-9), who had a three-game winning streak snapped as they lost for the first time under interim head coach Doug Weight.
Islanders goalie Thomas Greiss recorded 44 saves
Each of the first three goals followed chaotic sequences.
The Islanders went ahead late in the first on Leddy's goal, which was set up by John Tavares stealing the puck at center ice from Jakub Voracek near center ice. Mason turned back Tavares' breakaway, but Mason was on his back as the puck remained in the goalmouth.
Andrew MacDonald reached in with his stick and shoved the puck out, but Leddy intercepted the puck and fired a shot past Mason for an unassisted goal.
Quine doubled the lead 4:47 into the second when he was stationed to the left of the net as Shane Prince's shot bounced off Mason's pads. Mason could not corral the puck and Quine's put-back hit the top post and trickled into the net.
The Flyers pulled within 2-1 with 5:50 remaining in the period, when the puck bounced around the Islanders' zone for several seconds before landing at Simmonds, whose shot went under Greiss' legs. The goal ended a streak of 85 straight shots stopped by Greiss, who recorded shutouts in his previous two starts.
