Miller, Canucks shut out Coyotes 3-0
VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Goaltender Ryan Miller stopped 22 shots for his first shutout in more than a year and Sven Baertschi scored the winning goal in the first period as the Vancouver Canucks extended their winning streak to five games with a 3-0 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday night.
Brandon Sutter (penalty shot) and Bo Horvat (breakaway) scored third-period goals for the Canucks (19-18-3), who are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games.
It's the first time in more than three years Vancouver won more than four consecutive games.
The Coyotes (11-22-5) lost their eighth consecutive game.
The shutout was the 37th of Miller's career but his first in 70 games, dating back to a 3-0 win over Los Angeles on Oct. 13, 2015.
Most of the shots Miller faced against the Coyotes were from long range. In the third period, he stretched to make a glove save off Brendan Perlini during an Arizona power play.
Arizona goalie Mike Smith stopped 21 shots.
Sutter was awarded the penalty shot after being hooked by defenseman Luke Schenn on a breakaway. He scored his 10th of the season on a pretty backhand at 6:53.
Horvat used his speed to slice between a pair of Coyote defensemen and score on a backhand at 13:43. It was his second goal in as many games after going five games without a goal.
Baertschi's goal came unassisted at 9:51 of the first period off a turnover.
Baertschi intercepted a pass from defenseman Kevin Connauton just inside the Arizona blue line, took a couple of strides and beat Smith with a wrist shot on the glove side. It was his 11th goal of the season and seventh in the last 11 games.
The Coyotes managed only two shots on net during a ragged second period.
