Stars 2, Coyotes 1 (SO)

Mike Ribeiro’s shootout goal ended the game after the Dallas Stars used a late goal in regulation to stun the visiting Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 on Monday.

The Stars tied things 1-1 with 27.1 seconds left when Loui Eriksson deflected Sheldon Souray’s shot from the point past Mike Smith. Eriksson later scored in the shootout.

Radim Vrbata gave Phoenix a 1-0 lead at 5:55 of the third period with a power-play goal.

Eriksson had a golden opportunity moments before Vrbata’s score, but with Smith down and out, he hit the post.

Shane Doan, who was celebrating his 35th birthday, had an assist and scored in the shootout for Phoenix (0-1-1), which lost its first two games of the season for the first time since 2005.

The Stars (2-1-0) were 7-for-23 on the power play against the Coyotes last season but 0 for 7 on Monday, including three missed chances in the third period.

Kari Lehtonen finished with 40 saves, while surviving a Phoenix power play in overtime with a point-blank stop on Martin Hanzal.

Smith, who made a career-high 46 stops in a 6-3 loss at San Jose on Saturday, had 24 saves Monday.
