Flyers 5, Hurricanes 3

Claude Giroux scored two goals and set up another and captain Chris Pronger had three assists as the Philadelphia Flyers continued their mastery of the Carolina Hurricanes with a 5-3 road triumph on Monday.

Rookie Matt Read scored for the second time in as many games and Sergei Bobrovsky turned aside 17 shots as Philadelphia improved to 16-1-2 in its last 19 meetings with Carolina. For his part, Flyers coach Peter Laviolette is now 7-1-0 against the Hurricanes since guiding the latter franchise to the 2006 Stanley Cup.

After recording a goal and three assists in Philadelphia's 5-1 win over Carolina on Oct. 29, Giroux immediately picked up right where he left off. The 23-year-old opened the scoring 79 seconds into the contest after accepting Jaromir Jagr's lead pass and wristing it past Cam Ward.

Giroux gave the Flyers a 3-1 lead just 2:45 into the second after wristing a shot from the left faceoff dot into the top corner of the net for his team-leading 12th goal. He was credited with an assist 4:12 later after his wrist shot was deflected by Wayne Simmonds and past Ward, who was pulled in favor of former Flyer Brian Boucher.

Pat Dwyer netted a shorthanded goal with just one under second remaining in the first period. He also converted a penalty shot at 4:36 of the third as Carolina closed to within 4-3, but the Hurricanes ran out of gas and fell for the fifth time in six games.
