Hurricanes 4, Flyers 2

Alexei Ponikarovsky netted a pair of power-play goals and joined Chad LaRose by recording his first three-point performance of the season as the Carolina Hurricanes posted a rare 4-2 road triumph over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.

Jeff Skinner netted a highlight-reel goal with 15 seconds remaining in the first period and Cam Ward turned aside 30 shots for Carolina, which collected just its fourth win in 20 meetings with Philadelphia.

Ponikarovsky opened the scoring after converting a goal-mouth feed from LaRose with 6:18 remaining in the first period. The goal was Carolina's first in 27 power-play chances against Philadelphia.

Skinner doubled the advantage after using his superior skating ability to spin around Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen before tucking the puck past Ilya Bryzgalov for his ninth of the season and second in as many days.

After James van Riemsdyk put the Flyers on the scoreboard 1:33 into the second period, LaRose answered with a blast over Bryzgalov's right shoulder just over two minutes later.

Ponikarovsky then responded to rookie Matt Read's sixth goal in five games with his second power-play marker of the night. The Russian's bid at the airborne puck was tipped by defenseman Andreas Lilja and sailed past Bryzgalov.

Captain Chris Pronger (virus) and fellow defenseman Braydon Coburn (upper body) were scratches for Philadelphia, which has dropped two in a row after posting a 6-0-2 mark in its previous eight games.
