Senators 4, Hurricanes 3
Jason Spezza ended an 11-game drought with a pair of goals, giving him 200 for his career as the Ottawa Senators held off the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 Sunday night.
Spezza's first two goals of November helped the Senators halt a three-game home slide. Craig Anderson made 34 saves to remain unbeaten in regulation in six career appearances against Carolina (4-0-2).
Spezza used a spectacular individual effort to open the scoring just 55 seconds into the game. The Senators veteran blew past two Carolina skaters before sliding the puck past netminder Cam Ward's left pad.
After Patrick Dwyer evened things at 15:03, Spezza's milestone goal gave Ottawa the lead for good three minutes later. With Ottawa on a power play, Spezza took a pinpoint pass from Sergei Gonchar and beat a diving Ward from the right circle.
Rookie David Rundblad extended the edge with 14 seconds left in the second period, snapping a shot from the point that eluded a partially screened Ward.
Captain Eric Staal drew the Hurricanes to within one early in the third period, converting a rebound for just his second goal in the last 19 games. Ottawa's Zach Smith and Carolina's Alexei Ponikarovsky traded goals late in regulation, but the Hurricanes couldn't score the equalizer despite having a power play for the final 1:44.
