Jets 3, Maple Leafs 2
Blake Wheeler scored a power-play goal midway through the second period to extend his point streak to five games as the Winnipeg Jets won their third straight with a 3-2 victory over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
Ondrej Pavelec made 22 saves - including 12 in the third period - to improve to 14-12-5 on the season. It was the Jets’ 10th win of the month, a franchise record.
After Clarke MacArthur scored for the Maple Leafs in the first period, the Jets' offense came alive in the middle frame, thanks in large part to a penalty kill that has haunted Toronto all season.
At 2:51, defenseman Zach Bogosian’s blast fooled James Reimer after it deflected off blue-liner Luke Schenn. Just 2 1/2 minutes later - and seconds after a power play had expired - captain Andrew Ladd scored his 12th of the season to give the Jets a 2-1 lead.
Phil Kessel’s 21st goal of the season extended his point streak to five games and tied the game, if only for a few minutes.
Again with a man advantage, Wheeler deflected in a point shot at 10:50 for his sixth of the campaign.
The Leafs have given up a power-play goal in 10 of their last 11 games, and 26 of their 38 on the season.
