Ducks 4, Coyotes 1
Andrew Cogliano recorded his first career hat trick over a span of less than seven minutes in the second period to lead the visiting Anaheim Ducks to a 4-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday.
Jonas Hiller made 25 saves and Nick Bonino picked up a pair of assists for the Ducks, who improved to 9-1-1 in their last 11 games and continued to dig out of a large hole toward the bottom of the playoff pack.
Cogliano, who entered Tuesday with eight goals and only one multi-goal game this season, tied it 1-1 at 6:59 of the second. Anaheim caught Mike Smith out of the goal trying to play a puck behind the net and Matt Beleskey hit Cogliano streaking down the slot for the easy tally.
He wristed a shot from a bad angle at 10:07, coming up on a two-on-two break and somehow flicking it up off Smith’s arm and just inside the post.
Cogliano shoveled a backhanded shot between the pads 3:43 later for the natural hat trick. The Ducks may have gotten away with an offside call when Bonino grabbed a turnover and sent it ahead to Cogliano, who came in unmarked and made it 3-1 with his 11th tally.
Teemu Selanne capped it with an empty-net goal for his 16th of the season and 653rd of his career.
