Coyotes 3, Blackhawks 0

Mike Smith turned aside all 38 shots he faced and Radim Vrbata netted his team-leading 26th goal of the season as the Phoenix Coyotes recorded their fifth straight victory with a 3-0 home triumph over the reeling Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.

Boyd Gordon and Kyle Chipchura also scored and Gilbert Brule notched a pair of assists for Phoenix, which collected its fourth straight win at Jobing.com Arena and moved to within one point of the seventh-place Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference.

After yielding one goal in his last three starts, Smith stopped 16 shots in the third period to preserve his third shutout of the season and 14th career.

Chicago has lost eight consecutive games (0-7-1) for the first time in over four years (Dec. 30, 2007-Jan. 11, 2008).

After inducting former alternate captain Jeremy Roenick into the team's Ring of Honor prior to the contest, the Coyotes bolted out of the blocks quickly on Saturday.

Vrbata opened the scoring 3:14 into the contest after he skated around the net and banked a shot off the skate of defenseman Sami Lepisto and into the open goal. Vrbata extended his point streak to seven games with the tally.

Gordon doubled the advantage just 2:44 later after he cleaned up a rebound on the doorstep for his seventh goal of the season. Chipchura provided insurance midway through the second after he converted a 2-on-1 rush.
