Panarin, Blackhawks edge Blues in OT
ST. LOUIS -- Left winger Artemi Panarin scored 25 seconds into overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday night, extending their winning streak to seven games.
The Blackhawks began the overtime on a 4-on-3 power play because of a delay of game penalty on Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo with 1:36 to go in regulation. The winning goal came one second after the penalty expired.
The Blues tied the game with 2:11 to go in the third period on a blast by Pietrangelo. Center Jori Lehtera was in front of goalie Corey Crawford, and the Blackhawks challenged the goal because of goalie interference but the challenge was denied.
Crawford had protected a 1-0 lead since right winger Marian Hossa scored just 1:22 into the second period.
Hossa's goal, his seventh of the season, came off a rebound after goalie Jake Allen stopped the initial shot by defenseman Gustav Forsling but could not corral the rebound. It went directly to Hossa, who put it into the net 1:22 into the second period.
Six of Hossa's goals have come in the last seven games.
The league's leading scorer, Blackhawks center Artem Anisimov, had to leave the game because of an undisclosed injury in the second period. Anisimov had eight goals and nine assists during a career-high 11-game point streak, which ended on Wednesday night.
The Blackhawks had a great chance to take the early in the first period, when penalties 24 seconds apart by Blues defensemen Kevin Shattenkirk and Pietrangelo put Chicago on a 5-on-3 power play for 1:36, but they could not score.
The Blues had their own problems on the power play, going 0-for-3. They have scored only one power play goal in 24 chances over their last seven games. The Blackhawks have killed off 21 of their last 22 penalties.
