2014 NFL Draft: Austin Seferian-Jenkins Scouting Report

College: Washington

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 262 pounds

Strengths

Hands: Seferian-Jenkins’ hands are extremely reliable thanks to a solid technique that sees him catch the ball well away from his frame.  It is very rare to see a drop when he is in position to make a play on the ball whether it be extending over the middle or high-pointing a red zone catch.

Blocking: With a big frame and plenty of bulk,  Seferian-Jenkins easily sets the edge on outside runs from an in-line blocking position.  Furthermore,  he keeps driving through the play.  With that said,  Seferian-Jenkins’ cut blocking leaves a lot to be desired.

Size: Seferian-Jenkins has size comparable to Rob Gronkowski and,  although he is far from as athletic,  it allows him to move around in formations and stay on the field when the hurry-up offense comes into play.  Moreover,  it makes him a strong blocker who can become dominant in the pro game with a few coaching tips.

Weaknesses

Agility: When Seferian-Jenkins has the ball into his hands in the open field he does not have the requisite tools to make people miss and more often than not resorts to bulldozing opponents.  It is not always a bad ploy and will serve him well,  however,  defenders become accustomed to that style of play and can target the lower legs when making tackles.

Production: 41 catches as a freshman and 69 as a sophomore had everybody talking about the tight end but a 36-catch junior season raised some questions.  When watching tape it is evident that Washington native blocked a lot of the time and was underused as a catcher.  Nevertheless,  it will be up to scouts and coach’s to decide if it is an anomaly due to the Washington system or if it was down to the player himself.

Injury: During tests at the NFL Combine it was revealed that the former Huskies star had a stress fracture in his left foot.  Although the injury is not as serious as many,  it does mean Seferian-Jenkins will likely miss the Washington Pro Day on April 2nd meaning he will not have a chance to work out for scouts at all this off-season.

NFL Comparison: Marcedes Lewis,  Jacksonville Jaguars

These are two players who block and catch extremely well.  While neither are spectacular with the ball in their hands,  they provide mismatches and match-up advantages in a number of way.

Draft Outlook

It is hard to say if the stress fracture will cause Seferian-Jenkins to fall in May’s draft but it will certainly stop him climbing.  He could be in play for a number of teams at the back end of the first round if they prefer him to Jace Amaro,  but it is likely he is taken somewhere in the second round.

Best Fits

The Kansas City Chiefs could use another outlet for Alex Smith as they look to build on last season’s success.  The Chiefs have not had a stud receiver since Tony Gonzalez and the sky is the limit for Seferian-Jenkins.

It is no secret that the New England Patriots will be in the market for a tight end come May and Seferian-Jenkins could be their guy,  while the Washington Redskins could also utilise his talents.
