After Narrow Victory, Should We Temper Expectations for Florida State?

The Florida State Seminoles went into their Saturday matchup versus Oklahoma State with expectations to obliterate them. While the Seminoles still won, the narrow six-point victory was quite a shocking performance from the defending national champions and current No.1 ranked team. The question is: were the Seminoles a gimmick team, or did they simply have a poor game?

Purely talent-wise, there is not a team in the nation that is better than Florida State. There is NFL-caliber talent at every position, which few collegiate teams have ever been able to say. Jameis Winston is arguably the best quarterback in the nation, and the same can be said for a handful of other Seminoles in regards to their respective positions. The sheer athleticism of Florida State's starting squad makes it tough on opposing teams to keep up.

Offensively, Winston is the commander of a lethal arsenal. The offensive line in front of him is a top notch group that allows him enough time to make the throws he needs to make.

Similarly, players such as Rashad Greene and Nick O'Leary are wonderful receiving options for Winston to take advantage of. Even in the aspect of the offense in which Winston has no control, the running game, the Seminoles still dominate. Karlos Williams is a freak of a runner that proved what he was capable of doing last season.

Their offense has unlimited potential, but the offensive scheming is so bland that defenses do not have much trouble adjusting (much like Gary Kubiak's offense circa 2013). Jimbo Fisher has been know to restrict talent, but luckily for him, this current team is simply too talented for Fisher to entirely hold them back. Of course, some boundaries are set, but for the most part, this team can overcome the blandness and dominate regardless.

In regards to the defense, Florida State is starting a handful of new players, but also returning a handful of incredibly talented players. Mario Edwards, Jalen Ramsey, PJ Williams; the list goes on and on. Their defense is stacked and has the ability to keep the nation's best offenses at bay. Much like their offense, Florida State's defense is simply so talented that they have few limitations.

The talent on Florida State's roster is unquestionable. Their offense has electric potential and their defense can go toe-to-toe with any offense. So long as the team can get back into their groove, which they likely will, they will continue to be the team that recently won a national championship. So, to answer the opening question: Florida State simply had a poor outing and their expectations for the remainder of the season should be no different.
