Okay I guess you can't blink or you'll miss something around here. Almost half way through the college football season has me wondering if i've been chronologically froze for numerous weeks and have just awoke from my slumber. Nonetheless as much action as we have endured so far, rest assured their is plenty of hard-hits, game winning field goals, and eye popping plays left to go around for everyone. Let's check out the best games remaining in the conference in chronological order as we near the half-way mark.
Michigan at Michigan State November 2nd
Last year when these in state rivals met it was a battle of two ranked opponents as the Wolverines were held to a season low 82 yards on the ground but found a way to win 12-10 snapping a four game losing streak between the two. This year could be much of the same with Michigan ranked comfortably inside the top-20 and the Spartans on the rise as quarterback Connor Cook has vastly improved from the beginning of the season while his defense remains one of the most dominant in the nation. I expect another low scoring affair with a ground and pound, smash mouth, Big Ten battle in the trenches. I'm fairly certain Michigan will win this one, I'm just not sure which one.
Michigan State at Nebraska November 16th
Last year here, the Spartans were coming off a hail-mary victory against Wisconsin and came out hungover in Lincoln looking out manned and out matched. They were held to a season low in yards and points (by a defense that isn't very good) and lost 28-24 stretching their streak to 0-7 against the Cornhuskers. These two teams and MIchigan all play each other in a two-week span, with this one last. No doubt this game will have big implications on who takes home the Legends Division Title.
Northwestern at Nebraska November 2nd, Michigan November 16th, Michigan State November 23rd
How about this three game stretch!? Pat Fitzgerald and the Wildcats get no breaks here after losing an emotional roller coaster to Ohio State. No doubt a very solid group of talent on Northwestern's roster will be put to the test physically and mentally during these three games as they play the toughest three opponents in their division. Needless to say this will be the determining factor as to how the Wildcats end up as it could catapult them back to Big Ten relevancy, or send them spiraling down the conference totem pole in a hurry.
Penn State at Wisconsin November 30th
Is it weird that out of all these games this one intrigues me the most? Probably as much as it was weird that I spent most of my childhood summers in a basement watching the "Back to the Future" trilogy. Was that out loud? Head coach Bill O'Brien has this Penn State team going above and beyond expectations the world had for them just over a year ago. A large credit has to be placed on his ability to swoop up top recruit and now true freshman Christian Hackenberg who has all the makings of a star. Hackenberg has already supplanted himself as the bread and butter of O'Briens pro-style offense and will only get better as the season and his career goes on. They've certainly had their ups and downs this year but theirs an underlying theme in every game they've played and that is that their improving and getting better as the season goes on. Needless to say they should be at their pinnacle come seasons end and give Wisconsin a run for their money. Come the end of the year when they travel to Madison it wouldn't be wise for the Badgers to pull a Biff Tanner and call them "chicken" or they could end their season using the words or Dr.Emmit Brown screaming "Great Scott!!"
Ohio State at Michigan November 30th
Me along with the rest of the college football world had this one circled since the schedule came out and now were starting to fully understand why. Both teams perfect through six weeks of football these teams are riding high on confidence while both teams preseason goals were much different. The Buckeyes came into the season following an undefeated campaign in which they were unable to compete in the nation title due to NCAA sanctions with every expectation to not only repeat a flawless record, but make it to their goal of a championship birth. After numbing their biggest threat to date in Northwestern last week, Ohio State is 6-0 and has a soft schedule until the game you see here.
The Wolverines as much as Brady Hoke would like to tell you otherwise came into the season although talent filled, were young and raw on both sides of the ball and made it their number one priority just to build off their 8-5 record of last season and continue to improve. Now, with a perfect record of their own (5-0) they will play their asses off for their coach and their fans to fight for a piece of the Legends Division Title, but also give Ohio State a run for their money in capturing the Big Ten Title. Contrary to popular belief I can't tell you the future, but I don't need the "flying dolorian" to tell you this highly anticipated match up will live up to every ounce of the hype, ending one teams season on a sour note while the other team stands on the championship pedestal.
