SEC Preview Week 8

(15)Georgia vs Vanderbilt

After an upset loss to Missouri, Aaron Murray must lead Georgia to a rebound victory. With multiple Georgia offensive starters still injured, Aaron Murray will again be given the task of carrying the offense. Thus far, Murray has thrown 17 touchdowns accompanied by only five interceptions. His counter, Austyn Carta-Samuels, has only thrown 10 touchdowns, but six interceptions. Georgia’s JJ Green, who’s filling in for Gurley and Marshall, has the advantage over his Vanderbilt counter as well. Green is averaging 8.3 yards per carry on his 34 carries, while Vanderbilt’s duo of running backs are only averaging 5.1 yards per carry.

(11) South Carolina vs Tennessee

For the 2nd season in a row, Jadeveon Clowney prepares to take on Antonio Richardson (Tennessee Left Tackle). If Richardson fails to contain Clowney, the already abysmal Justin Worley will be torn apart. Worley has completed a measly 56% of his passes and his 9 touchdowns are shadowed by his six interceptions. His running backs Rajion Neal and Marlon Lane have combined for 896 yards and 11 touchdowns on just over 150 carries. South Carolina’s quarterback and running back team of Connor Shaw and Mike Davis are much more explosive. Shaw is a dual threat that has 12 total touchdowns, but zero interceptions. Davis is slowly being recognized as another elite SEC running back. This season, Davis has ran for 742 yards and nine touchdowns through his 111 carries.

(22) Florida vs (14) Missouri

Injuries continue to pile on for Florida with the most recent injury being to Matt Jones, their most efficient running back. Responsibility now trickles down the depth chart to freshman Kelvin Taylor and the other featured back, Mack Brown. Game managing quarterback Tyler Murphy will be forced to spread the field and work his wide receivers. Missouri has also fallen victim to the injury epidemic. Starting quarterback James Franklin will be out for the remainder of the year with a shoulder injury, which leaves more responsibility on their rushing attack. Russell Hansbrough and Henry Josey’s combined 749 yards and 10 touchdowns give more than enough reason to believe they give Missouri a legitimate shot to win.

(24) Auburn vs (7) Texas A&M

After a short injury scare against Ole Miss, Johnny Manziel is ready to take down another SEC opponent. Manziel is having another Heisman worthy season in which he has already accumulated 2,273 yards and 19 touchdowns via both his arm and his legs. His favored target Mike Evans has accounted for 737 of Manziel’s passing yards and five touchdowns. For Auburn, Nick Marshall returns to the helm of the Auburn offense after missing last week’s game. To this point, he’s been little more than an average quarterback with an element of unpredictability. Tre Mason, who takes the heavier part of the workload, and Cameron Artis-Payne have a total of 904 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns this season. Unfortunately, they won’t be able to keep up with the Texas A&M offense.

(6) LSU vs Ole Miss

Zach Mettenberger is raising eyebrows all over the nation. His vast improvement has extremely elevated the LSU offense from it’s mediocre 2012 season. To this point, Mettenberger’s 15 touchdowns and roughly 1,900 yards are tainted by only two interceptions. His success can also be accredited to his incredibly talented WR tandem of Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. Jeremy Hill will be looking to add to his 715 yards and nine touchdowns that he has already mustered up this season. Ole Miss will have a tough time going punch-for-punch with LSU. Bo Wallace is a rather incompetent quarterback, despite having tall, talented receivers such as Donte Moncrief and Laquon Treadwell.

Arkansas vs (1) Alabama

AJ McCarron will lead the Crimson Tide to yet another victory over a fellow SEC contender. McCarron has done his job as a game manager well and has fed off of the success from the rushing attack. TJ Yeldon and Kenyan Drake have already combined for 867 yards and 11 touchdowns. Arkansas, on the other hand, is much more predictable. Brandon Allen is a train wreck of a quarterback as he has completed fewer than half of his passes. Alex Collins and Jonathan Williams lead their rushing attack that Arkansas depends so heavily on. The two have a mind-blowing 1,284 yards and eight touchdowns at the halfway point in the season.
