Top 5 College Football Coaches on the Hot Seat

Every year in college football the “Coaching Carousel” produces old faces in new places. This upcoming season could produce the same effect with some high profile coaches on the hot seat. Here is a look at the top-five coaches on the hot seat for the 2013-2014 campaign.

5. Nebraska - Bo Pelini

Pelini has led Nebraska to a 49-20 record since he has been coach, which is not an easy thing to do. But the issue with Pelini is the fact that the Cornhuskers were embarrassed last season by Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game. Nebraska also has not won a bowl game in three years. Pelini may not be on the verge of being fired, but another disappointing season may lead to a new coach.

4. Army – Rich Ellerson

Army is not a perennial contender, and by no means should they be, but the biggest thing for that program is to beat Navy and to be competitive. Army has not beaten Navy in a dozen years, and the Black Knights have only won 17 games since Ellerson took over in 2009. Unless they defeat Navy, Ellerson could be out of a job.

3. Missouri – Gary Pinkel

Missouri’s football program has grown tremendously over the last decade, as Pinkel has grown from being 9-14 in his first two seasons to an overall record of 90-61. The only issue with Pinkel is the fact that the Tigers struggled mightily last year, even though it was their first season in the SEC. The Tigers lost to Vanderbilt at home last season. No disrespect them, but to make it big in the SEC, a team MUST beat Vanderbilt every year. This is a big year for Missouri and for Gary Pinkel.

2. Michigan – Brady Hoke

Overall, Hoke has done well at Ann Arbor, but for a program with a rich tradition, the Wolverines need to win each and every year. Last season with a talented roster, Hoke and the Wolverines lost five games. Hoke will need to win 10 games this season, or like the coach before him, he may be out of a job rather early. Everywhere Hoke has gone has gotten better over time, so if the Wolverines do not improve, the board of trustees may get a little antsy.

1. USC – Lane Kiffin

Lane Kiffin has been on the hot seat no matter where he has been. In Oakland, Kiffin lasted only 20 games before being relieved of his duties, and at Tennessee he had a job where he looked to be comfortable, then bolted to USC. Whether it be from higher management or from himself, there always seems to be a massive amount of pressure on Kiffin. Last year, the Trojans were due to make a huge run, especially since star quarterback Matt Barkley returned for his senior season with  “unfinished business”. But after a very disappointing 7-6 season, the uneasiness has begun in Los Angeles. Many believe that Kiffin needs to lead USC to a very successful season this year or he is looking for another job. He has been a character for what seems to be ages, but if he does not clean up his act and win, Kiffin may not be able to find another high-profile job.
