Just over a year after they traded away two of their top prospects for him, the the Houston Astros designated Carlos Gomez for assignment on Wednesday. In 323 plate appearances for the Astros this season, Gomez held just a .210 batting average, .272 on-base percentage and struck out in 31 percent of his at bats.
He does have over five years of MLB service time and given his affordable contract, could be claimed on waivers by a team who is willing to take a chance on a change of scenery being what Gomez needs to turn things around. Gomez is set to be an unrestricted free agent after this season.
