When Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras slammed his facemask into the ground during Friday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals and it struck the home plate umpire, the team knew the news was coming. It became official on Saturday as MLB announced Contreras received a two-game suspension for his actions.
Contreras got into an argument with HP umpire Jordan Baker after a missed strike three call later gave St. Louis a run and after pitcher John Lackey charged the mound and received an immediate ejection, Contreras followed suit.
It's a blow for Chicago, who missed its star catcher for a month already with a strained hamstring. Now he'll be out for two more games during a critical stretch in September. Fortunately, Chicago does have depth at the position with Alex Avila, Rene Rivera and Victor Caratini.
