While there was plenty of excitement when the Pittsburgh Pirates called up top prospect Josh Bell, the joy didn't last for long. Despite Bell going 2-for-2 with a grand slam as a pinch hitter, he never saw another at bat and has been sent down to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Bell's demotion and vacant roster spot will be filled by Gerrit Cole, who returns just over a month after his last start when he exited early against the St. Louis Cardinals. Bell returns to Triple-A, where he had a .324/.407/.535 triple-slash line with 13 home runs, 53 RBIs, 19 doubles and 41 walks.
Bell will likely come back up to Pittsburgh in September when rosters expand and the Pirates could use his power off the bench for their playoff run. Until then, he will continue to refine his craft and get every day at bats in the minors.
