Just as the Toronto Blue Jays found some room for optimism with Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Donaldson nearing a return, now they'll be without someone else from their lineup. On Monday, Toronto placed catcher Russell Martin on the disabled list with irritation in his left shoulder.
Martin reportedly dealt with the irritation early on in spring training and given its limited severity, opted to play through it. But as the games, throws and a recent collision piled up, the irritation grew much worse and now he's landed on the disabled list.
The 34-year-old certainly has struggled this season. In 76 at bats, Martin posted a .197/.365/.342 slash line with a .707 OPS and just seven RBIs.
It's a bigger hit defensively and for Toronto's catchers as Martin's experience with Toronto's starters and his ability to call games is what makes him so critical for the team. With Martin out of action for the next 10-plus days, 26-year-old Luke Maile will see the majority of starts at the backstop.
Fantasy owners who own Francisco Liriano will want to bench him until Martin returns. Liriano is an erratic pitcher as it is and is iffy in some starts, but he's been a disaster when Martin hasn't been catching him over the years.
