A day after picking up infield prospect Javier Betancourt from the Detroit Tigers in the Francisco Rodriguez trade, the Milwaukee Brewers have added yet another young infielder.
The team announced that it has acquired shortstop Jonathan Villar, 24, from the Houston Astros in exchange for pitching prospect Cy Sneed.
Villar, who was acquired by Houston from the Philadelphia Phillies in the Roy Oswalt deal several years back, has actually played parts of three seasons in the Majors. He's coming off a solid 2015 campaign that saw him hit .284 with two homers and 11 RBi in 116 at-bats.
With top prospect Orlando Arcia likely close to the Majors in Milwaukee, Villar won't be a long-term solution there. Though, he has experience playing second base, third base and the outfield. That opens up a whole heck of a lot of avenues for the Brewers. It also means the team could be looking at trading former All-Star second baseman Jean Segura.
