The trade that the Detroit Tigers made with the Texas Rangers was a blockbuster, as second baseman Ian Kinsler was brought to the Motor City and slugger Prince Fielder was sent to the Lone Star State. While this trade still benefits both teams, including Detroit, Kinsler may not be the best choice for your fantasy team.
Kinsler brings a lot to the table for the Tigers and will help them in terms of finding a second baseman, a leadoff hitter and a threat on the basepaths, but there are better options for you to take at second base for your fantasy team that will still be on the board after Kinsler is gone.
Comerica Park's left field fence is thirteen feet longer than the fence in Arlington, which could definitely take a toll on Kinsler's power numbers. Regardless of this, Kinsler's power numbers have been decreasing anyway in the past three seasons, dropping from 32 home runs in 2011 to thirteen last season.
Kinsler's batting average has also been in the .250s in three of the past five seasons, which is a cause for concern. On the plus side, he will see some good pitches batting in front of Torii Hunter, Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez. He will also score a good amount of runs as long as he can get on base fairly often.
Although he will score runs, Kinsler's RBI total may take a toll as well. He will normally come up without many hitters on base, as the bottom of the Detroit lineup will feature Alex Avila, Rajai Davis and Alex Gonzalez: neither of whom are good hitters although Davis possesses incredible speed on the basepaths.
Again, Kinsler will still be a productive player for Detroit and the trade will pay off for the Tigers, but it is safe to overlook Kinsler in your fantasy draft. Ben Zobrist, Matt Carpenter and Jose Altuve are all better options, as they can be taken several rounds later than Kinsler and can provide stats just as good or even better.
Projections: .274 average, 16 HR, 69 RBI, 20 SB, 95 R
