Did the Los Angeles Angels Give up too Much for David Freese?

Did the Los Angeles Angels Give up too Much for David Freese?

The Los Angeles Angels have traded for former World Series MVP David Freese. The Cardinals received center fielder Peter Bourjos along with prospect Randal Grichuk. Bourjos will be 27 years-old when the 2014 season starts. He is a career .250 hitter and batted .276 last season. He does not have much power as he only hit three home runs but he only played in 55 games.

Freese had a very disappointing 2013 season himself as he finished the season with a .262 average with 60 RBIs. These numbers don’t look horrible but compared to his 2012 season things were not the same. The question that remains here is whether or not the Angels gave up to much for the 30 year-old Freese.

For one, moving Bourjos to the Cardinals will allow for superstar Mike Trout to control the traffic in center field. The “throw in” player in this trade is obviously Grichuk but the Cardinals have added a very reliable outfielder in this process as Grichuk won himself a Gold Glove in AA last season. When you ask if the Angels gave up to much for Freese the answer is no. Freese is already a known athletic specimen who will produce from the jump at third base. He had a rough 2013 but was dealing with back issues for most of the season.

Losing Bourjos doesn’t really affect the Angels because they have guys like Trout who are far superior. This seems to be a good deal for both teams unless one of these players starts playing above their expectations. Look for this trade to work out for both parties involved.
