Things have gone a little differently for the St. Louis Cardinals this season. Last fall, they played in the World Series for the fourth time in ten seasons and went into 2014 as the favorites to win not only the National League Central, but the National League pennant once again.
Instead, the Cards sit in a tie for first in the Central with the Milwaukee Brewers, with the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates trailing close behind at the All Star break. Out of these three teams, however, the Cardinals have to be considered to have the best chance to finish in first place because they have something that neither of the other three do: experience.
While Milwaukee, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are all fairly young, St. Louis is loaded with players who have been in every situation before and know how to win.
One such player is outfielder Matt Holliday, who made a name for himself in 2007 as a member of the Colorado Rockies and has played at an All Star level ever since - until this season.
Holliday, a career .309 hitter, is hitting just .265 this season. He has never hit under .290 in any season of his career, but is in completely unfamiliar territory this year. Holliday is also not hitting for power well this season. Usually a lock for over twenty homers, he has hit just six in 93 games; on pace for about ten-to-twelve.
With catcher Yadier Molina sidelined for nearly the rest of the year, Holliday needs to step up for the Cardinals to have a chance at winning the division. The competition will be stiff, and St. Louis needs offensive help without its All Star catcher.
Holliday seems to excel in big situations as he was a catalyst in the 2007 Rockies' miracle run to the World Series, and he seems due for an improvement.
Someone in your fantasy league is probably dying to get rid of Holliday after what has been an incredibly disappointing season thus far. Pick him up for a low price and watch him pay dividends for your team as well as the Cardinals.
