Good Value Players
Pitcher
Edwin Jackson, Cubs, $6,700: Jackson scattered four hits and a walk over seven shutout innings against the Cubs on Saturday to earn his third win of the season. None of the four hits against Jackson went for extra bases and the right-hander fanned a season-high 11 batters, after recording more than five strikeouts in just one of his first eight starts. He's turned in quality starts in four of his last five outings, while issuing just three free passes over his last 20 innings. Today he faces the Padres who rank last in all batting categories so the matchup is favorable for Jackson.
Catcher
Wilin Rosario, Rockies, $3,500: Rosario went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI in Tuesday's win over the Giants. In just his second game back from a viral infection that cost him a dozen games, Rosario didn't seem to be remotely weakened, smacking a 424-foot blast to left field in the sixth inning for his four homer of the season. Though manager Walt Weiss slotted Rosario in the sixth spot in the order Tuesday, that position in the order should still be plenty fruitful with Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez, and Nolan Arenado all batting in front of him.
First Base
Adam Dunn, White Sox, $3,300: Dunn went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in the White Sox's win over the Royals on Tuesday. The home run was Dunn's second of the season since, and it continues a solid piece of hitting for him the past few days. Jose Abreu has been unable to play first base the past week because of foot soreness, so Dunn made his fourth start at first in seven games. Dunn has generally hit better as a position player than a DH in his American League career. However, Abreu should be back in the field in the coming days, and Dunn back at DH.
Second Base
Neil Walker, Pirates, $3,100: Walker crushed his ninth homer Sunday, going 2-for-4 with two RBI in Game 1 against the Yankees. He's on his way to a career year and a possible All-Star nod, but it's important to note that Walker has gone on power spurts in the past. He has 15 homers in his last 51 games, dating back to September.
Third Base
Trevor Plouffe, Twins, $3,200: Plouffe went 2-for-4 and hit his third home run of the season Wednesday. He finished with one run scored and one RBI. The home run was a solo shot in the eighth inning that traveled an estimated 439 feet to left field. Plouffe has now gotten two hits in each of the last three games. The third baseman is now hitting .257 and his 29 runs batted in are third most at the 3B position in all of MLB.
Shortstop
Ian Desmond, Nationals, $2,800: Desmond launched a solo home run in Thursday's loss at Pittsburgh. It was his eight long ball of the season. Desmond's batting average is just .234, but his power makes him an attractive option for fantasy owners. Surprisingly, he's stolen just two bases so far this year, after recording at least 20 steals in each of his previous three seasons. For as cheap as he is this is a can’t miss play. This type of value will help strengthen other positions on your roster.
Outfield
Starling Marte, Pirates, $3,400: Marte went 3-for-4 with two bunt singles and a triple against the Orioles on Wednesday. Neither sore hamstrings nor back spasms have conspired to slow down the speedy left fielder. Marte's contact rate is down from 75.4 percent in 2013 to 69 percent, but the results are typically electric whenever he does hit the ball. He holds a career .359 BABIP.
