My Value Picks
Pitcher
Mike Minor, Braves, $6,900: After finally coming off the disabled list Minor has had a terrible season. This marks the first time since July 12th that his ERA sits under 5.00. There have been signs of a turnaround though. Minor now has three consecutive quality starts which have come against three quality offenses in Athletics, Dodgers and the Reds. If he can reign in the walks, which have been a serious problem, Minor should be able to make it four quality starts in a row when he faces a weak Mets offense that is likely without David Wright.
Catcher
Brian McCann, Yankees, $2,700: Despite the underwhelming season in his first year in pinstripes McCann is at least hot over the last week or so. He has a six game hitting streak and has two homeruns in his last eight games. The Tigers are throwing a rookie out on the mound tomorrow and if the Yankees can rattle his cage early McCann could be in for a big day while he remains hot.
First Base
Joe Mauer, Twins, $3,300: Mauer’s days as a batting champion are probably over but that doesn’t mean he can’t be a valuable asset to those in daily leagues. Mauer is seeing the ball very well lately and now has eight RBI and four runs scored in his last four games. Jeremy Guthrie is on the mound for the Royals today who gave up four runs his last time out against the Twins.
Second Base
Joe Panik, Giants, $2,900: Panik has come out of nowhere to solidify the second base position for the Giants. He has batting a terrific .299 this season with 15 runs and 13 RBI. If there is one knock on him so far it is that he doesn’t provide power or speed with no steals and only one homerun so far.
Third Base
Adrian Beltre, Rangers, $3,200: Anytime a superstar like Beltre is as cost efficient as he is today it’s difficult not to put him in your lineup. I’m not sure hwy he is so cheap as he is batting .337 over the last 30 days and .375 over the last 15. He has hit the Astros very well this season so be sure to get him into your lineups and reap the benefits.
Shortstop
J.J. Hardy, Orioles, $3,100: With the limited number of games being played today there are not many enticing value options at the shortstop position. Hardy seems to be the best option today and fortunately is having a good month of August. He is batting .306 with four homeruns and 13 runs, and RBI. Jeremy Hellickson is on the mound which isn’t a great matchup but we are really thin at shortstop today and you have to take risks to succeed in daily leagues.
Outfield
Carlos Beltran, Yankees, $3,300: In an injury riddles season Beltran has been a disappointment in his first season as a Yankee. He does however have a five game hitting streak that includes one homerun, five runs scored and two RBI. The Yankees bats are clicking right now and that is in large part due to Beltran.
