Fantasy Baseball Daily May 14, 2014

Today we have a full slate of games to choose from that range from early afternoon and night games with the earliest being the Detroit Tigers at the Baltimore Orioles starting at 12:35 PM Eastern Standard Time.  With this game we have 15 total games today with 30 teams worth of players to analyze so let’s get into it and win some money!

We bring you fantasy daily picks for FanDuel.com and if you haven’t signed up yet, be sure to follow this link http://eDraft.com/FanDuel/MLB to receive a 100% deposit bonus on your initial deposit.  This is an amazing deal that you can’t miss so be sure to check it out and make yourself some extra cash.  The cap for FanDuel is $35,000 with only one player at each position like a real MLB lineup (with the exception of outfielders where you can start any three players that are outfield eligible.)

The scoring system for FanDuel is as follows:

Hitters: Single = 1pt, Double = 2pts, Triple = 3pts, Homerun = 4pts, RBI = 1pt, Run = 1pt, Walk = 1pt,
Stolen Base = 2pts, Hit By Pitch = 1, Out (calculated as at bats - hits) = -.25pt
Pitchers: Win = 4pts, Earned Run = -1pt, Strike Out = 1pt, Innings Pitched = 1pt

Good Value Players

Pitcher

Garrett Richards, Angels, $6,700: Richards allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six and walking two in seven innings against the Blue Jays in his last start on Friday.  Richards kept rolling Friday, as he worked around first inning trouble to notch his fourth consecutive quality start.  The hard-throwing right-hander had the potent Blue Jays offense guessing, and has now struck out at least six batters in his last four trips to the mound.  Richards is emerging as one of the top young pitchers in baseball in 2014, and will take a 2.80 ERA into his next start against the Phillies tonight.

Catcher

Alex Avila, Tigers, $3,100: If you want a solid catcher to start for your daily matchup, it will cost you but you will most likely get what you pay for.  A solid risk to take though would be Avila of the Tigers.  He hasn’t done anything great as of recent but he will be facing the Baltimore Orioles pitcher Kevin Gausman who will be making his first MLB start for the 2014 season.  His statistics from last season show that he had a high ERA which was at 5.56 even though he only pitched in 20 total games and 47.2 total innings.  Avila should be able to get some points on the board.

First Base

Prince Fielder, Rangers, $3,400: It seems that Fielder is finally starting to come around after having a very slow start to the season.  He has recorded a hit in eight of his last 10 games and scored negative points only once suing that span on FanDuel.  What’s encouraging is that he's got a fantastic 22:20 walk to strikeout ratio, and his .252 BABIP means the hits are likely to come.  The value is really low for Fielder as well so it would definitely be smart to play him while he’s a low value before he shoots back up to being too expensive.

Second Base

Jose Altuve, Astros, $3,200: Altuve went 3-for-5 with a double during the Astros' 4-0 loss to the Rangers on Monday. He was also caught stealing in the game.  Altuve has logged three straight multi-hit games for the Astros, and is now batting .298 on the year.  While the 24-year-old was caught stealing Monday, his 13 stolen bases ranks third in all of baseball.  Altuve is on pace to finish the year with 54 steals, which would far surpass his career-high mark of 35 that he set last season.

Third Base

Pedro Alvarez, Pirates, $3,300: Alvarez went 3-for-5 against the Cardinals on Sunday, raising his batting average back over the Mendoza Line at .215.  Alvarez, who narrowly missed going deep for a grand slam in the third inning, is struggling with a .222 BABIP, 70 points below his career mark of .292.  A 19:33 walk to strikeout ratio is indicative of his best plate discipline ever, but the end product hasn't panned out.  It will be interesting to see if Alvarez continues along with improved selectivity at the plate or reverts to his all-or-nothing approach which more accurately reflects his past.  The third baseman leads Pittsburgh with eight homers and 24 RBI.

Shortstop

Alcides Escobar, Royals, $3,200: Escobar went 2-for-4 with a grand slam in Sunday's victory over the Mariners.  Escobar won't hit many home runs over the course of a season, but he certainly made this one count, parking a second-inning long ball off Seattle's Roenis Elias.  The 27-year-old has been a surprisingly reliable source of offense for the Royals this year, a team that has often struggled to score runs.  Escobar is fourth on the team in both average (.276) and RBI (15), doing it all while hitting ninth in the order for the majority of games.  He's currently boasting a .331 OBP, and the last time he sustained a number like this over an entire season, he was able to rack up 35 steals.

Outfield

Chris Young, Mets, $3,200: Young blasted what proved to be the game-winning blow, a two-run home run in the eighth inning of the Mets' 9-7 win over the Yankees on Monday.  Young broke and 0-for-18 slump with hits his last two at-bats Sunday and scored the game-winning run.  He carried that over to Monday, notching two more hits, including the home run.  Young should be in the lineup most games, though he will cede time to either Juan Lagares or Eric Young.
