Fantasy Baseball: Time to Add Tom Koehler

Who is Tom Koehler

He is a starting pitcher for the Miami Marlins. Before too long, he will be on a fantasy team in your league, so before you miss out on him, add him right away.

So far this season, Koehler has thrown 25 and a third innings, and has struck out 18 batters. In these 25 innings, he has started four games and is 2-1 with a 2.13 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP.

For perspective, Koehler has a better ERA than Masahiro Tanaka, a better WHIP than Gio Gonzalez, and more strikeouts than Hiroki Kuroda. How is that for a performance so far this season?

Now, the argument was made that Koehler has not pitched against anyone yet this season. His first start was against the San Diego Padres, who are a terrible offensive team. But, his next three starts are against division foes who can really hit the baseball.

In Koehler's last three starts he has faced the Washington Nationals twice and the Atlanta Braves. First, the Nationals have scored the second-most runs in the National League this season. Koehler has faced them twice and yielded just two runs and six hits in 13 innings. The Braves are not hitting the ball well as far as average is concerned, but with 25 home runs already in this young season, Atlanta is no picnic to pitch against either.

Tom Koehler has earned a spot on your fantasy roster, and do not wait around because he faces the Mets on Sunday. If that has not convinced you to add him, his sabermetrics are favorable as well. Koehler has given up just 11 line drives in 25 innings so far this season. That means only 11 of the hitters he has faced has hit a ball on the nose, an indication of great stuff. His BABIP (batting average on balls in play) backs up that claim, as it is a very low .225 with a ton of groundouts. (49.3 percent of outs)

Add Koehler now, and reap the benefits of a player that is almost guaranteed to be on the waiver wire.
