Opening Day has finally arrived and the baseball season is underway. This also means that the fantasy baseball season is in full swing. Injuries have already happened but none to the extent that you would have to worry about your team's future. Every position is different and below are the five best catchers to start for the week.
5. Brian McCann, New York Yankees
McCann is the first player to make this list and for good reason. He will be making his Yankees debut against the pitiful Houston Astros. He will be facing Astros No. 1 pitcher Scott Feldman followed up by Jarred Cosart and Brett Oberholtzer. You may be asking yourself who are these guys? And my answer to that is: exactly. McCann will have a big week, followed up by a big weekend versus the back-end of the Toronto Blue Jays' rotation.
4. Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins
Mauer and the Twins will be facing the Chicago White Sox this week followed up by the Cleveland Indians. Thankfully for the Twins, they only had to face stud pitcher Chris Sale yesterday and won’t have to see him again for awhile. Mauer went 0-4 in his season opener. The only other real threat that Mauer has to face is the Indians' Danny Salazar. The other pitchers that Mauer will face have not proven themselves in the Majors and you have to imagine that Mauer is going to expose that.
3. Buster Posey, San Francisco Giants
If you drafted Posey to your team you have to already be excited with the numbers he has put up. Sure, it was only one game but he looked great and the injury he suffered in spring doesn’t look to be a factor. Posey went 2-5 with a home run, two RBIs and one run scored. After the series with the Diamondbacks end, the Giants will be traveling to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers. Fortunately for Posey and the Giants, they will not have to face stud pitcher Clayton Kershaw who is on the 15-day-DL.
2. Jonathan Lucroy, Milwaukee Brewers
Lucroy is arguably the best in-game catcher in all of baseball but his bat is very close to putting him into the top five in all of baseball at the catcher position. The Brewers are taking on a depleted Braves rotation which will have Lucroy facing struggling Aaron Harang followed up by the Boston Red Sox home opener against Jake Peavy. Look for Lucroy to have a very solid fantasy week.
1. Yadier Molina, St. Louis Cardinals
For at least the past five years Molina has been the best catcher in the game. Things are not going to change this year either. In his first game of the season he hit a solo home run which proved to be the only run scored in the entire game. Molina might have to face the toughest pitchers of any player on this list but considering how great his bat, is you can’t really be worried about who he is facing. Molina is hands down the No. 1 starting catcher of the week. If you have him on your team I don’t even have to tell you to start him because you are going to regardless.
