Fantasy Baseball Winners and Losers Week 3

Every week I will be giving the best performances, along with the worst performances of fantasy baseball players. The names will likely be different every week, although some players may make the list occasionally. If you see one of the players that you have on your fantasy team continue to pop up on the losers list, it might be time to drop him. Of course it is only week three, so don’t go jumping the gun too soon.

Here are the five worst performances of week three.

5. Josh Reddick  Right Fielder, Oakland Athletics

Reddick had a bit of a scare, when he crashed into the wall after attempting to make a catch. Since then his numbers have been significantly lower. He is batting an atrocious .056 with eight strikeouts and isn’t looking like himself. He should come out of this slump once he is 100 percent healthy. Be concerned with his numbers, but remember, it is a long season and he has the potential to dominate. DO NOT GIVE UP ON HIM JUST YET.

4. Kelly Johnson  Second Basemen, Tampa Bay Rays

In the past week, Johnson has struck out 11 times in only 20 at-bats. His batting average for the week is an even .200, which is unacceptable. There are a few bright spots here, since he has hit two home runs and has been walked five times in the past seven days. The fact he is getting walked is very important to look at. If he can find his plate presence and not swing at so many pitches, he could turn his season around. Be cautious here.

3. Rickie Weeks  Second Basemen, Milwaukee Brewers

Rickie, Rickie, Rickie. Weeks may be the most important piece that the Brewers need to get going. He has the potential to be an All-Star but hasn’t really showed it since his tight friend, Prince Fielder left Milwaukee. This week he has struck out 11 times and is batting .174. He did pick up two walks, but other than that hasn’t been productive. Weeks showed at the end of last season that he can be the dominant second basemen that he was in 2010 and ‘11. The only question is when will he prove it? Once again, be patient with this guy, long season.

2. Adam LaRoche  First Basemen, Washington Nationals

Here is another solid bat that is simply having a bad week. LaRoche is batting .176 for the week with four strikeouts and two walks. He has only recorded one RBI in this time and it seems like his back injury might be worse than what he is telling his trainers. Overall, his entire season has been below expectations and could be dropped in a lot of leagues if he doesn’t pick it up soon.

1. Adam Dunn  Designated Hitter, Chicago White Sox

Talk about not seeing the ball with this one here. Dunn has recorded zero hits in his past 20 at-bats. He is getting older and things aren’t looking up. He has struck out nine times during this slump and has to have fantasy owners pulling out their hair. Anyone who drafted Dunn, was well aware of what he does which is, hit home runs or don’t hit at all. If you look at what he has done over the entire year is also poor. He has two home runs to his name and a .102 batting average. Earlier in the year, I wrote an article saying not to draft this guy and I stick by it. Drop Dunn now, or reap the consequences.

Now onto a brighter note, with the top five winners of week three.

5. Chris Johnson  Third/First Basemen, Atlanta Braves

Maybe the hottest batter in all of baseball, who is not getting talked about whatsoever goes to Johnson. He is batting .478 for the week with a home run and five RBIs. He has recorded eleven hits during this span and has only struck out three times. Not only is he having a great week, overall he is having a great season. He is third in all of baseball with a .412 batting average and has drove in seven men. He was not owned in 100 percent of leagues to start the year. If he is still available in your league, pick him up now!

4. Brandon Phillips  Second Basemen, Cincinnati Reds

The best second basemen in the National League continues to prove why he is just that. Over the past week Phillips has been on a tear. He has drove in 8 runs and boast a .304 batting average. He has two walks during this time as well and even a double. His OBP is .360 and he is locked in. If you drafted Phillips you deserve to reap the benefits and he is definitely helping your team this week. His defense doesn’t help your fantasy team but boy is he good in the field. So good, that I would say he is a better defensive fielder than Robinson Cano. Look for “Dat Dude BP” to continue doing his thing.

3. A.J. Burnett,  Starting Pitcher, Pittsburgh Pirates

Sure, he only pitched once this week but he took a no-no into the seventh inning. He ended up giving up one hit and received the win along with eight strikeouts. For the season, he is 1-2 with a 2.63 earned run average. His batting average against is phenomenal as well, recording a .195. Some scouts thought the end could be sooner than later with Burnett, but he is out to prove his doubters wrong this season. My advice to you if you have AJ, is to continue starting him until the All-Star break. He will likely slow down after that and could be used as great trade-bait. But for now keep starting him.

2. Yuniesky Betancourt  Third Basemen, Milwaukee Brewers

Yuni-B signed with the Brewers on March 26th and is making his impact known early. In the past seven games he has a .316 average with eight RBIs. During this time he has hit two doubles with six hits overall. He has struck out more than you would want for your fantasy team with nine. If you happen to have started him on your team this week, pat yourself on the back. Don’t look for Betancourt to give you 8 RBIs a week. You also shouldn’t expect him to continue this pace all year, but for the time being, keep him in your lineup.

1. Mike Napoli  Catcher, Boston Red Sox

The biggest winner of week three goes to this man. He has dominated pitchers over the past week with a league high nine RBIs. He is also batting, .333 with nine hits. He has struck out nine times but when he is driving in runs and still batting .300, it doesn’t matter. There were a lot of questions about Napoli coming into this season and he has silenced all doubters to this point. If you drafted a catcher late; hoping to get numbers like this, your plan has worked, up to this point.
